As Donald Trump sits around and gripes about NBA athlete Steph Curry refusing to attend the White House and having opponent LeBron James back him up, the NFL took to the field to kneel during the National Anthem in response to Trump's bigotry and divisiveness that he displays to the nation. Over the last 4 days, Trump has tweeted multiple times about the lack of respect the NFL has portrayed towards the flag and their refusal to stand and pledge to a lie. As the country has directed it's attention to this ongoing debate, Puerto Ricans struggle to stay alive and find it's way off of the island so that they can begin to live again.
Since Donald Trump began his campaign, his main objective was to divide the country, whether he wants to admit it or not. But he campaigned on the simply promise to "make America great again," while I am not exactly sure what this means because America has never been "great," but Trump's definition of his slogan is becoming more apparent everyday. His bigotry towards blacks and minorities, transgenders and Muslims, while showing gratitude for white supremacists and praising people such as Robert E. Lee, has proven that his main focus is to divide the country.
Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, leaving behind trails of destruction and many Puerto Ricans stranded. Island dwellers beg desperately for help and rescue, while scrambling to find food, water and healthcare. Unlike Houston and Florida, Puerto Rico sits on an island in the Caribbean, therefore, residents of this small island had nowhere to evacuate, leaving them with no choice but to honker down and ride the storm. In the wake of Hurricane Maria, Puerto Ricans, just like any other American, sought after food and shelter while patiently waiting for the United States government to get search and rescue operations underway. Despite FEMA responding to the devastation, there is still more manpower needed to provide aid to the island; however, Trump has been M.I.A. the entire time. Reason being; he was too busy tending to sports matters that does not concern him, nor does he understand.
As Donald Trump continues on his rant about the NFL, former presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama made a joint effort to donate to disaster relief for Puerto Rico. They formed a campaign titled "One America Appeal," which allows donors to contribute funds for aid in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to thehill.com. I find it sad, despicable, outrageous, and just plain ignorant that Trump overlooked the state of Puerto Rico and the simple fact that former presidents had to rally together to get the job done for him. And the Trump Administration just doesn't seem to get it. They're all too busy trailing behind Trump and kissing his ass to save face from getting on his bad side or being "fired." I'm just going to be really straight forward with this because there is no excuse.
Donald Trump has got to go and soon. Allowing him to remain in presidency is a slap in the face to America and everything that it is "supposed" to stand for. The divisiveness, the bigotry, the hate, the white supremacy, all of it is a disgrace and embarrassment to this country. We have a fool in the White House on national TV yelling out phrases like "son-of-a-bitch" and using language and saying things that you would not want your kids to say. This man is leading the nation down a path of destruction, conflict and frustration. He has left Puerto Rico behind to fend for itself, and when called out on it, his excuse is "well Puerto Rico's infrastructure and massive debt has been going downhill for a while," and "Puerto Rico is in the middle of the ocean, you can't just drive trucks there." Whatever he can say to save face and not look like the big idiot he is.
The problem were facing as a country is the fact that there are some people in this country that have yet to knowledge that Puerto Ricans are American citizens now. Americans are so quick to spend a dollar in Puerto Rico to soak in the sun and lounge on the beaches, but they won't put a dime in disaster relief efforts. Conservatives have proven once again that their dollar is the only dollar that matters, and they only spend it if they have something to gain from that expense. Who cares about saving fellow Americans. Like I always said, "if it ain't white it ain't right." It's like Katrina all over again. Except this time it's not black people stranded and desperate for aid, it's our Hispanic brothers and sisters that have felt the brunt of the neglect American presidents can place on their own citizens. I also find it ironic that Puerto Ricans, as well as other Hispanic communities tend to vote Republican in elections. I just hope and pray that they rethink their party choices. The GOP has never been welcoming to minority communities in the United States. To vote for them is a vote against you and your beliefs. It's a vote against your pride and heritage because their main objective is to get your vote and leave you high and dry, desperate for change that is not meant for the poor or minority communities. And if you think going Republican will get you rich, think again!
