These are the words that spewed out of my 14-year-old high school freshman daughters mouth as we got our evening dose of CNN's Anderson Cooper AC 360. I know a lot of you may be thinking...."why are you watching the news anyway, they all lie." First, for those of you that are wondering why I quoted that phrase, you'd be surprised at the countless number of black people that I have come across that refuse to follow the media or believe anything that is put out in mainstream media. While I understand this prospective on the media, I do think that it is important to stay "woke" on what mainstream media is saying. Reason being; it challenges you to think!!
One of the hottest topics in politics right now is DACA. By now we should all know what this acronym means, (if you don't, then you should probably watch the news). Assuming you know what this means, I will say that to some, this program is not exactly what the media makes it all cracked up to be (depending on the channel you watch). Being that I am an elementary school support teacher, I have worked with different grade levels, with different types of learners from different cultural backgrounds over the years and quite honestly, this program impacts more than what you may think.
Not only is my 14-year-old bothered by DACA coming to an end, but my 8-year-old daughter and 11-year-old-son, who all have immigrant friends are bothered by this as well. This Trump administration has not thought about the impact this will have on American citizens, emotionally and financially. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of being in great company with Dreamer's. I have come across them on personal and professional occasions. And what many people fail to realize is that these Dreamer's in particular did not come here with consent. They were brought her as infants, toddlers, and children under their parents will. For a brief synopsis, they come here and learn the language, the food, the culture, the overall American lifestyle, it's all they know. Eventually they get further educated, get jobs, earn money and pay taxes like every other American citizen (and I say every other because not all of us pay taxes, i.e., Donald Trump). But if you highlight and study what I just said, you would understand the issue.
It's not just about the parents coming here illegally, which is wrong, but deeper, it's about the children they brought here to have a better life and have better opportunities. After all, isn't that the focus of the Constitution? I mean people, understand how this program works before you pass judgement. There are rules and stipulations tied to this. They must enroll in college or serve in the military to be honored citizenship. They must not commit a crime or be a threat to American society prior to being granted citizenship (although we are our own threat most of the time, but that's another topic I'll dive into later). And there have been a number of applications denied under the Obama administration, which further proves there there is already a no non-sense approach to the program to begin with.
So help me understand, what is the point of further depleting the country of good, knowledgeable, hardworking citizens further than you already have??
I came across a YouTube video yesterday titled "Why Black People Don't Care About DACA" and I think this is pure BS!! It's not just about Mexicans and "building a wall," this is about ALL immigrants who were brought here as children. This is where the media steers us in the wrong direction, and why it is important to pay attention to the news in order to decipher the bull! Do you know how many Haitian immigrants I know, socially and professionally? Tight-knit families, hardworking, and spiritual Haitian families that do not have citizenship. These are our people, Black people. This only goes to show that if we as blacks were never issued birth certificates, we would be on Donald's "chopping block" too, as he stamps "You're Fired" on our passport back to our home country, if only the slave traders kept records of where that might be.
I know a lot of you might be thinking, "what does that have to do with here and now," truth is, not much. But just think about where we would be. Think about where our other brothers and sisters are going. Think about how ending this program is going to affect the mental state of our youth now and in the future. Think about how different things will be. With White Nationalists showing up and showing out, without wearing hoodies, just imagine. DACA has an indirect effect on all of us believe it or not.
Imagine yourself walking into an elementary school tomorrow with a co-worker who has the responsibility to teach children from all cultural backgrounds, disclose to you that they see nothing wrong with ending DACA. These are some of the teachers in our school systems, breathing hate with every rise of a minorities hand, and every eye roll for a correct answer. I see it everyday, I witness it everyday, but they never admit it. So I can only imagine what is being taught in schools that house predominately white students in rural areas. It's not just a "Mexican" problem, it's an American problem.
